The Austrian Press Agency reports that 2.6 million self-tests were carried out last week in Austrian schools, just under 500 of which were also positive. However, a third of these are likely to be false positives.
At schools, there have been 494 positive Corona self-tests in the week from last Friday to the day before yesterday, Wednesday. With a record number of 2.6 million tests conducted (previous week: 2.5 million), this was 110 “hits” less than the previous week (604). That translates into a rate of 0.02 percent (previous week: also 0.02 percent). Meanwhile, not a single school is closed because of clustered Corona cases.
About one-third of tests probably false-positive
Pupils again accounted for the majority of positive test results (435), and there were 59 among school staff. As in previous weeks, most positive tests were recorded in Vienna with 205 (previous week: 250), followed by Lower Austria with 93 (previous week: 77) and Upper Austria with 47 (previous week: 77). Styria registered 43 positive self-tests (previous week: 59), Tyrol 34 (65), Carinthia 22 (23), Salzburg 20 (24), Burgenland 17 (18), and Vorarlberg 13 (11).
On average, about one third of the antigen tests are false-positive, i.e. in these cases the result is not confirmed by the more informative PCR test. Conversely, the “nose picker” tests, which are primarily used, do not detect all infected persons.
