The job platform StepStone Austria has taken a look at the figures and uncovered few surprises : It is still well-educated men in top positions who lead the salary chart. Nevertheless, there are also interesting developments when it comes to salary – and the opportunity to get more out of it in times of crisis, knows StepStone salary expert Conrad Pramböck.

Average salary is around 44,000 euros per year
On average, Austrian professionals earn around 44,000 euros gross per year, across the country and across all industries. However, salaries increase with career level – from the very bottom to the very top by more than double. Upper management now earns more than 100,000 euros, while middle management still earns around 66,000 euros and lower management around 52,000 euros a year gross.

Sales beats IT – in terms of income
The industry winners are the pharmaceutical and medical technology sectors: employees here take home around 56,000 and 55,000 euros gross per year, respectively, while in the insurance sector, for example, it’s “only” 49,000 euros. At the bottom of the food chain are employees in the hotel industry (around 38,000 euros per year) and the textile industry (around 32,000 euros per year).

“This clearly shows the disparity between professions that require high qualifications and many years of training and those that are often done by women in part-time jobs,” comments Barbara Oberrauter-Zabransky, head of studies at StepStone Austria, on the figures. “The higher the qualification, the better the pay.”

Top earners are doctors and managers
The highest salaries are earned by doctors (79,000 euros), managers (73,000 euros), financial experts (72,250 euros), such as investment advisors or controllers, and lawyers (63,650 euros). In terms of industries, Austria’s key industries lead the ranking: Banks (64,250 euros) are in first place, closely followed by the consumer goods/durables sector (63,600 euros), the chemical and petroleum processing industry (62,800 euros) and the pharmaceutical industry (62,500 euros).

“System-relevant” occupational fields pay poorly
Conversely, the demand for occupations increasingly described as “system-relevant” is not necessarily reflected in better salaries: for example, consulting, management and real estate are among the best-paid occupational fields, with gross annual salaries of more than 50,000 euros each, while occupations such as healthcare and retail (39,000 and 38,000 euros annually, respectively) are far behind.
