The delta variant of the coronavirus, originally discovered in India, has now also been detected in Vienna in larger numbers. Currently, there are 22 confirmed cases, as a spokesperson for the crisis management team reported today.

For the most part, these are already longer ago. However, there are also still 35 suspected cases where sequencing has not yet been completed. Of the 22 confirmed cases, only five people are still currently ill, it said.

Returned from travels
In those individuals who were infected with the delta mutation some time ago, the virus is likely to be related to travel and, subsequently, infection in the family circle. In Austria, 112 new infections have been registered in the past 24 hours, most of them from Vienna with 57. Austria-wide, there are currently a total of 41 confirmed infections with the delta mutation. Most of those affected are now considered to have recovered. There are also 52 suspected cases.

Several federal states affected
A delta variant of the coronavirus was also detected in Carinthia on Monday, and three other suspected cases are under investigation. There are several cases in Lower Austria. Eight infected people had not previously been vaccinated, according to a report in the Kronen Zeitung newspaper. A contact person of an infected person had to be hospitalized because of a severe course, according to the newspaper.

In Salzburg, according to “Krone,” there are several suspected cases, and in Styria, according to Ö1, a kindergarten child contracted the mutation but has since recovered. In Vorarlberg there are eight confirmed cases, Upper Austria reported one case.
