Minister of the Interior Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) today called for people to stay home on Saturday despite Halloween. At the same time he announced increased controls during the night to Sunday. He had given instructions to the Director General for Public Security to implement these increased controls at the level of the state police directorates.

According to the Minister of the Interior, the focus is on the one hand on compliance with the legal requirements in the night catering sector, and on the other hand on preventing larger celebrations and meetings in public places. Younger people in particular would like to celebrate on Halloween night.

Personal responsibility demanded
“In this year of special challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, we should all also act on our own responsibility and contribute to the protection of our fellow human beings,” said Nehammer. This meant “above all, no wandering around in disguise in larger groups and the organization of private celebrations and parties”. That is a contribution, which each individual can make.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, since the start of the priority actions on September 24, 2020, around 88,000 checks have been carried out in the catering sector throughout Austria. Around 1,000 complaints have been filed.
