Vienna. Great Britain has postponed its relaxations by one month due to the delta variant. The U.S. health agency warns that the mutant, which first appeared in India, already accounts for 10 percent of corona cases in the U.S. and is “far more contagious and dangerous.”
In Germany, it is currently believed to be three percent of cases. In Vienna, 50 new delta cases have been found in the past 14 days. In Lower Austria, there are probably around 20. It is also spreading in Salzburg. New infection rates remain low overall. But because the variant is 60 percent more contagious than the B.1.1.7 variant, it could become widespread in Austria. Model calculations from Vienna show that 80 percent fully vaccinated people are needed to prevent a stronger wave in autumn.
