Cell phone signature can be activated at A1, Finanz online and the post office, and green passport certificates can also be added to smartphone wallets.
On Sunday, the federal government presented its promised EU-compliant solution for verifying the three-G rule – the so-called Green Passport. However, the systems are still not running like smoothly. A green passport requires a so-called cell phone signature. How to activate this and where to find the PDF files of the green passport, we explain here step by step.
Basically, the green passport is not a single document, but a government online portal where all three-G certificates are recorded and stored – this includes the vaccination certificate, all officially recorded PCR and rapid test certificates, and certificates for convalescents. But how do you get these, and what do you need?
Many ways to the mobile signature
Citizens can view and download their certificates on the government website gesundheit.gv.at. However, this requires a so-called digital proof of identity by means of a cell phone signature from the Viennese company A-Trust. Very few people will already have activated this – it can be applied for both online and in person.
Activation in the A1 store
Since last week, the cell phone signature can be activated directly in the branches of telecom provider A1. The offer is available to customers of all network operators and is free of charge. To register, an appointment must be made online at any A1 store under “Concerns” and “Mobile phone signature”. An official photo ID and a cell phone are required. Users are then verified by an employee and receive a PIN for the cell phone signature directly on their smartphone.
Finance online portal
People who are already registered with the Ministry of Finance portal can also apply for their cell phone signature there, at finanzonline.gv.at, under the menu item “Activate cell phone signature”. This requires the participant identification, user identification and the PIN for Finanz online. The access data will then be sent by mail within a few days.
Post.at
The procedure works somewhat differently at the Austrian post office. There, the personal account for post.at must first be verified at a branch, then the mobile signature can also be activated via the Post website. The identification of the post account can be carried out at all post offices. The cell phone signature can then be applied for on post.at, and the access data can be obtained in a similar way to Finanz online, namely by mail.
Registration office
Furthermore, the cell phone signature can also be processed in person at a number of registration offices, which can be found on the A-Trust website.
Step by step to the green passport
As mentioned above, the green passport is not so much a concrete document like the passport, but rather a collection of certificates that are supposed to attest to the three-G access requirements – as of July 1, they will also apply to travel within the EU.
First, the website gesundheit.gv.at must be accessed. Then the “Login” field, which can be found underlined in the text or in the upper right corner, must be selected. The login is done by cell phone signature. Attention, as already mentioned, the cell phone signature must be activated beforehand.
Once the registered phone number and the corresponding password have been entered, you will receive an SMS with a TAN. Experience has shown that it can take a while for this SMS to arrive and for the corresponding input field to be loaded. Once you have successfully logged in using the TAN, you will be redirected to the portal. Here you will find access to the green passport.
If you now click on “green passport”, a page with all registered three-G certificates should appear. These can now be downloaded by selecting, for example, “Vaccination certificate” or “Test certificate”.
Certificates as PDF
The certificates are PDF documents, a file format that cannot be edited later and is particularly suitable for printing. On them there are so-called QR codes, which from now on can be scanned and checked by controlling restaurants or entertainment venues. You can also scan the certificate yourself using the online tool at qr.gv.at and check its validity.
Certificate for Apple Wallet
A PDF in digital form on the smartphone or as a printed piece of paper is not the most practical solution for EU travel or local visits. Developer Fabian Pimminger published a suitable tool on Sunday, with which the PDF certificate can be easily transferred to the so-called Apple Wallet or Wallet apps for Android.
Many will know these digital wallets for iPhones and Android phones from boarding passes or movie tickets. From the wallet, the certificate can already be displayed on the lock screen of the smartphone – including the QR code.
To do this, users must first upload their certificate to the Pimmingers website. As the developer describes, the copy is only temporarily stored on the page and deleted again as soon as the user leaves the website. After the upload is successful, the PDF file of the certificate is converted into a so-called passkit file. This can now be added to the Apple Wallet or a wallet app for Android.
