A new CoV outbreak with the particularly contagious delta virus variant has Sydney authorities considering a new lockdown. Ten new cases have been registered within 24 hours, authorities said today.
This is an unusually high number for Australia, which is trying to seal itself off against the virus by imposing strict entry regulations, among other things.
The first person infected with the new CoV outbreak is believed to be a driver of international airline crews. He became infected with the delta variant, which is considered more contagious than previous forms.
The virus then “jumped on” – apparently without any direct physical contact at all – in a cafe near world-famous Bondi Beach and a shopping mall, said New South Wales state government chief Gladys Berejiklian. A total of 21 cases are now attributed to this origin.
Mandatory masks imposed
The government ordered a mask duty in public transport and shopping centers for the greater Sydney area, it did not yet impose a lockdown. However, it has not ruled it out.
Australia has largely contained CoV infections with border closures and strict quarantine rules. It is trying hard to remain one of the few countries in the world without endemic spread of the coronavirus, with strict measures even for low numbers of cases.
Since the pandemic began, about 30,000 infections and fewer than a thousand deaths have been recorded nationwide. Currently, only about two percent of Australians are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.
