The forecast severe weather arrived in parts of Salzburg, Upper Austria and Lower Austria early Tuesday evening. At first, mainly the Flachgau, the Innviertel and the Salzkammergut were affected and later also the Mostviertel and northern Lower Austria. A violent thunderstorm cell had formed around Lake Fuschl and Lake Matt. The storm moved with squalls and hail over Zell am Moos towards Seewalchen am Attersee. The hailstones, up to four centimeters in size, damaged cars and smashed through glass panes.

At the same time, strong thunderstorms also occurred in the Schärding area. Within a very short time, rainfall amounts of around 30 liters per square meter fell in the affected areas. Small-scale flooding occurred. Due to fallen trees after lightning strikes and because of the strong storm, the Westbahn line between Salzburg Hauptbahnhof and Hallwang-Elixhausen had to be closed for all trains. The tracks had been displaced after a storm. ÖBB was working to set up a rail replacement service, it said at around 7:30 pm.

Because the thunderstorm cells moved very slowly, the soil and sewage system could not absorb the masses of water and hail. The result was severe flooding. Hundreds of firefighters were called out.
