New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has lifted the state of emergency imposed in March 2020. As of Thursday, the state of emergency is out of effect, Cuomo said at a press conference on Wednesday (June 23). Fighting the pandemic and vaccinating the population are still priorities, but the “emergency chapter of this fight” is over, the governor announced via Twitter. At the same time, he warned against the spread of the delta variant. The imposition of the state of emergency had given Cuomo the power to override local and state laws and regulations and rule by ordinance.
Israel has reimposed restrictions after a surge in new infections and is postponing entry permits for vaccinated tourists. Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett spoke of a “new outbreak” of the coronavirus in the country. In the future, even those who have been vaccinated or recovered will be sent to quarantine if they have had contact with a person infected with a “dangerous variant” of the coronavirus. In view of the Corona pandemic, European cultural workers are to be supported with almost 90 million euros from EU funds. Under the Creative Europe program, 88 million euros will be made available for this year “to help artists, authors and performers reach audiences across Europe again,” as the responsible EU Commissioner Marija Gabriel announced on Wednesday (23. 6.). Among other things, European cooperation projects as well as training and performance opportunities for young musicians are to be supported. Japan is banning the serving of alcohol at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The up to 10,000 permitted spectators at the events may also not bring any alcoholic beverages themselves. The background to this is an attempt to reduce the risk of infection. This was announced by the organizers on Wednesday (23. 6.). According to Seiko Hashimoto, president of the Games organizing committee, the Asahi Holdings brewery, which is one of the Olympic sponsors, had agreed to the decision.
Hungary has largely lifted the border closure it imposed in September. People can enter Hungary by land from any neighboring country except Ukraine without conditions, according to a decree by Prime Minister Viktor Orban that appeared in the Hungarian Official Gazette late Tuesday night (June 22) and took effect immediately. The border closure applied mainly to tourists, as there were numerous exceptions for business travelers, commuters, diplomats and athletes. Furthermore, neither tourist arrivals by plane nor commercial overnight stays for tourists are possible. People who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in one of the 17 countries with which Hungary has concluded agreements on mutual recognition of the respective vaccination certificates are exempt. Among them, however, is no Western country. Border controls at the internal borders of the Schengen area, which were introduced last September, are also to be abolished.
