Russia has recorded a new one-day high in deaths in the CoV pandemic. 697 patients had died with the coronavirus, the crisis management team announced today in Moscow. The number of recorded new infections had risen to 24,439. That was the highest figure since Jan. 16. The country has a population of about 145 million.
In the largest country on earth in terms of area, the highly contagious and dangerous delta variant is particularly rampant. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has therefore classified Russia as a virus variant area.
Many at European Championship games without mouth/nose protection
The Russian capital Moscow and the tourist metropolis of St. Petersburg, where the last of seven European soccer championship matches was played yesterday, are particularly affected. Pictures from the city’s fan zones showed many people without the mandatory mouth-nose protection.
Moscow reported 116 deaths and 7,446 new infections today, while St. Petersburg reported 110 deaths and 1,733 new CoV cases. New daily highs are expected in the coming days as well.
No nationwide lockdown planned
Despite the high numbers, no nationwide lockdown is planned, the Kremlin had said. However, there are increasing restrictions on public life in individual regions due to the high infection figures and the overloading of hospitals – such as in Buryatia on Lake Baikal.
In Moscow, people are now only allowed into restaurants with a negative PCR test or as vaccinated people with a QR code. Employers in many sectors in the capital are obliged to enforce vaccinations of their employees.
