The European health authority ECDC has counted more than 2,500 coronavirus infections in connection with the European Football Championship so far. In the third tournament week of the European Championship, there was a significant increase compared to the week before, the EU agency confirmed in response to a query from Deutsche Presse-Agentur.
Scotland most affected
Infection cases in seven countries could be linked to the European Championship, said Vicky Lefevre, the director responsible. Scotland was by far the most affected with 1991 cases.
The Scottish team played its European Championship group matches in Glasgow and at London’s Wembley Stadium. In Great Britain, the delta variant of the virus, which is considered more contagious, is spreading rapidly.
Hundreds of cases in Finland
436 cases had been registered in Finland recently, she said, mainly after Finland’s soccer players played in St. Petersburg and fans apparently brought the virus with them from Russia. Some cases have also been reported in Denmark, France, Sweden, Croatia and the Netherlands.
It is not certain where the affected fans became infected. This could have happened in stadiums as well as in fan zones, during travel as well as during private meetings around the games. The development is “not unexpected” given the CoV situation, Lefevre said. Large events with crowds continue to be fraught with risks, she said.
She also pointed out that the Delta variant had not yet been “on the scene” when plans for the European Championship games with tens of thousands of spectators had been nailed down.
