More than one million Viennese have received at least the first sting of the CoV vaccination. In Vienna, there is for example in the Austria Center since Tuesday the possibility to be cross-vaccinated.
The mixed vaccination scheme is already in use at the Austria Center. People who got Astra Zeneca the first time will now be vaccinated with Biontech/Pfizer at the second vaccination appointment, if they so choose.
“We started implementation yesterday. Anyone on site who wants a heterologous vaccine schedule – meaning a switch between two vaccines – will get that. It used to be that you needed a doctor’s confirmation. That will now be eliminated,” says project manager Birgit Fykatas-Guth of MA 15.
Procedure does “not comply with approval”
No recommendation for mixing comes from the National Immunization Panel (NIG). Only for the possibility of combining vaccines, they said.
“If because of side effects, special reactions, thrombosis, pregnancy onset, or if the vaccinee absolutely insists on having another vaccine, then heterologous vaccination should be offered,” said vaccinologist Ursula Wiedermann-Schmidt of the National Immunization Panel.
Efficacy studies of heterologous vaccination with vaccine combinations are still underway. Wiedermann-Schmidt: “On the part of the National Vaccination Panel, it must already be said that this is a procedure that does not correspond to the approval.”
Vaccination service was informed
In any case, there is now so much mRNA vaccine in Vienna that everyone who wants can get one, the city says. A vaccine change and a vaccination date change by telephone should also be possible. According to the city of Vienna, everyone at the vaccination service has been informed about the possibility of cross-vaccination.
Medical association for cross vaccination
“I would recommend choosing an mRNA vaccine as a second vaccination,” Thomas Szekeres, president of the Austrian Medical Association, told “Ö1”-M Mittagjournal on Tuesday. Because the study results “are very encouraging. But it doesn’t matter if you get vaccinated twice with the same vaccine. What matters is that you get vaccinated twice,” said the president of the medical association. The heterologous schedule can also shorten the interval between vaccinations, Szekeres said.
665,000 people in Vienna fully immunized
One million Viennese have received at least the initial CoV vaccination, and nearly 665,000 are fully immunized. Biontech/Pfizer’s mRNA vaccine has been administered the most so far, nearly 1.2 million times. Astra Zeneca has been vaccinated about 275,000 times. This is followed by Moderna and Johnson&Johnson.

From May to July, the number of vaccinations rose steadily. While just over 14,000 people were vaccinated per day in May, the number has now risen to almost 20,000. Experts urgently advise people to get their second vaccination in any case. Only full immunization protects against the delta variant, which will lead to a significant increase in infections in Austria in the fall at the latest.
