Argentina has surpassed the 100,000 coronavirus death mark despite its sometimes strict curfews. Compared to the previous day, 614 deaths related to Covid-19 had been added last night (local time), bringing the total to 100,250 since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to data from the Ministry of Health in Buenos Aires.
More than 4.7 million people in the South American country have been infected with the coronavirus, according to the report. Argentina has a population of about 45 million, more than a third of whom live in the greater Buenos Aires area.
Hard hit
The virus has taken the entire population of a medium-sized city, wrote the Argentine newspaper La Nacion. Argentina is one of the countries with the highest number of deaths per million inhabitants. Latin America – apart from Argentina, for example, also Peru and Brazil – is currently particularly hard hit.
At the beginning of winter in the southern hemisphere, the second wave hit Argentina hard. In order to contain the pandemic, the government had already imposed quite tough curfews in mid-March last year, which were extended again and again.
This initially succeeded in slowing the spread of the coronavirus and preventing a collapse of the healthcare system. However, after months of restrictions, the discipline of the population also weakened significantly.
