Due to the increasing number of infections with the coronavirus, there are again tightenings, for example in the night gastronomy. The Viennese microbiologist Michael Wagner from the University of Vienna recommends not to enter indoor areas without a mask.

Access to night catering will be possible only with vaccination or proof of a negative PCR test from July 22, it was said Thursday evening from the Ministry of Health. In catering and events, the registration requirement remains mandatory until further notice, it said. In addition, the certificate for the green passport should be given only after complete immunization.

Wagner: “Pandemic not over yet”.
“I think it’s important to communicate very clearly to the population that the pandemic is not over yet. Many people have not yet had the chance to protect themselves. Therefore, it is a social task to protect these people and this also includes the appropriate measures,” Wagner told “Wien heute”.

“We must now act sensibly and with foresight. If possible, we must prevent people from staying indoors for long periods without protection. This principle has been abandoned to some extent by the opening steps. Antigen tests are not enough. One must switch as far as possible to the more reliable PCR tests and introduce more realistic validity for the tests,” says Wagner, who also recommends: “If possible, go vaccinating and indoors, if possible, not without a mask with non-vaccinated persons.

Increase due to delta variant
The fact that the number of cases is rising is no surprise to Michael Wagner: “England is about two months ahead of us – in terms of vaccinations as well as the delta variant. Delta is much more contagious and there the seasonal slowing effect of summer is not enough.” Even vaccinated people can contract the coronavirus, Wagner warns: “We won’t be able to achieve herd immunity until as many people as possible get vaccinated and until there’s vaccination for children under 12.”

The Ministry of Health also said Thursday that by increasing vaccination coverage rates and refraining from further relaxation steps, the threatening development could probably still be slowed down. If hesitant, on the other hand, serious containment measures, such as partial or real lockdowns, would likely be necessary, it said.

In order to further increase the number of vaccinations, a vaccination boat is now operating on the Old Danube in Vienna – on Fridays and weekends, registration is not necessary. At the presentation of the vaccination boat, Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) had spoken out against further relaxations and supported a mandatory vaccination certificate for guests of night catering: “Social partners, federal government, provinces, municipalities should rack their brains together whether some steps are not better now than serious cuts that may then have to be made in a few weeks.”
