The head of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (CDC) has warned of hundreds of thousands of new coronavirus infections per day in the United States. If the country stood together, the unvaccinated got vaccinated and people wore their masks, the situation could be brought under control within a few weeks, Rochelle Walensky told CNN last night (local time).

“Our models show that if we don’t do that, we could be looking at several 100,000 cases a day – similar to the surge in early January.” Asked if the numbers could now also drop quickly, Walensky said, “We haven’t seen that yet.” Rather, he said, in quite a few southern U.S. states, such as Florida, there has been an exponential increase. There have been many more deaths in the past with such high numbers of cases, he said.

No information yet on booster vaccinations
The reason for the difference, he said, is vaccination. With vaccine breakthroughs, the course of the disease is usually mild, he said. “But what it (vaccination) can no longer do is prevent transmission,” the CDC chief said, referring to the particularly contagious delta variant. Walensky did not provide specifics on how to handle possible booster vaccinations. They are looking at the data and will then make an independent decision, she said.

The delta variant, meanwhile, has led to a sharp increase in new infections across the country of 330 million people. Their number has skyrocketed from about 10,000 a day in June to an average of nearly 90,000 now.
