The school year starts with a safety period. The first vacations are coming soon.
On September 6, the new school year starts in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, in the other provinces it starts on September 13. Unusual is the corona-related start with a three-week “safety phase” – during this time there are uniform requirements for corona tests and mandatory masks at the schools.
Following is an overview of the most important dates.
What happens during the safety phase?
During the safety phase, all students and teachers must take a Corona test three times a week, regardless of vaccination status. Mouth-nose protection must also be worn outside of class. This phase ends in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland on September 27, and in the west on October 4.
Which measures apply then depends on the Corona development in the respective federal state.
Autumn vacations at the end of October
The first vacations will take place at the end of October: for the second time, the Austria-wide fall vacations are scheduled between the national holiday (October 26) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). Since October 26 falls on a Tuesday this year, many schools are likely to take Monday off. In this case, the vacations would begin on October 23 and last eleven days.
For the children and teachers, however, the free fall vacation week does not mean any additional vacation days: In return, classes will be held on the two Tuesdays after Easter (April 19, 2022) and Pentecost (June 7, 2022), and at least one of the four (compulsory schools) or five (AHS/BMHS) “school-autonomous” days will be eliminated. If October 25 is released school-autonomous, one more is gone.
Days off in December 2021
Mary’s Conception (December 8) falls on a Wednesday this year, and the first day of the Christmas vacations on December 24 falls on a Friday. The Christmas vacations end on Three Kings’ Day on January 6, 2022. Since this day is a Thursday, Friday (January 7) is once again a good choice for a school-autonomous day off.
Semester break 2022
The 2022 semester break is scheduled in Vienna and Lower Austria from February 5 to 13. In Burgenland, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg, they fall on February 12 to 20, and in Upper Austria and Styria on February 19 to 27.
Easter in mid-April 2022
Pupils will have a uniform Easter break from April 9 to 18.
More days off and the Matura
This year, the national holiday on May 1 falls unfavorably on a Sunday.
On the following day (May 2), the 2022 central school-leaving examinations will begin with Latin and Greek examinations, which will last until May 12 (Italian).
On May 26, there will be another public holiday, Ascension Day, and the next day will be a day off from school.
The Pentecost vacations from 4 to 6 June do not really have a vacation character: apart from the Pentecost weekend, they now only consist of Whit Monday – Tuesday is taught normally due to the introduction of the autumn vacations.
The last holiday before the end of school is then Corpus Christi on June 16 – here, too, the following day is a candidate for a school-autonomous day.
And then again the summer holidays
The school year ends on July 1 in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland and on July 8 in the other federal states. School will then start again on September 5 and 12, 2022, respectively.
