A possible general vaccination requirement brought into play by head of government Mario Draghi is causing criticism in Italy. The head of the right-wing nationalist party Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy), Giorgia Meloni, said Friday (Aug. 3) in an interview with the newspaper La Stampa that she opposes mandatory vaccination. Earlier, Matteo Salvini, the former interior minister of the right-wing Lega, spoke out against the duty. The head of the Social Democrats, Enrico Letta, on the other hand, expressed positive views on compulsory vaccination. Draghi had affirmed at a press conference on Thursday that he could imagine introducing a general vaccination obligation. However, he said, this would require the European and Italian drug agencies to establish vaccines as ordinary medicines with full marketing authorization. At the moment, vaccination is conditionally approved as an emergency medicine.
A third vaccination dose is now being offered to certain population groups in the country. This was announced by Prime Minister Mario Draghi on Thursday (Sept. 2) after a meeting of his government. A third dose will be given to people with a weak immune response starting at the end of September, Health Minister Roberto Speranza specified. As of Thursday, more than 70 percent of the population over the age of 12 to be vaccinated had been vaccinated. In addition, stricter rules have been in effect in Italy since Wednesday. Anyone traveling on long-distance buses or high-speed as well as intercity trains needs proof that they have been vaccinated against Covid-19, tested negative or have recovered. This proof is also known as a Green Pass in Italy. It is a digital or printable certificate.
