With a three-week “safety phase” the new school year begins today in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland for about 490,000 children and young people. During this time, three Corona tests per week must be taken in order to participate in the face-to-face classes, one of which must be a PCR test. Testing can be done at the school; alternatively, certificates from other authorized testing sites can be brought in. Outside of class, students must wear a mask.
For about 38,000 children in these three provinces, it is the very first day of school. They can be accompanied to school by parents as usual – but they must show proof of 3G and wear a mask throughout the school building. The approximately 650,000 students in the other states still have a week of vacation, and the same rules apply to them starting next Monday.
Away from Corona, the new school year will bring, among other things, the delivery of digital terminals to almost all first and second grade AHS, middle school and special school students, as well as the introduction of compulsory ethics lessons for all fifth grade AHS or first grade vocational middle and secondary school (BMHS) students who do not attend religious education classes.
