Since Thursday, all Lower Austrians can book an appointment for the CoV booster vaccination. Previously, only people in nursing homes received the third prick. However, the booster is not yet for everyone.
Last week, the booster vaccinations began to be administered in Lower Austria. So far, about 3,000 residents of seven nursing homes received the third prick. On Thursday, registration on the platform www.impfung.at was unlocked for everyone – with different recommendations from the National Vaccination Panel depending on age, pre-existing conditions and vaccines.
People over age 65, at-risk patients or those vaccinated with AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson should get a booster six to nine months after the second shot, according to the recommendation. For all others, it is nine to twelve months. Regional Health Minister Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig (SPÖ) appealed at a press conference on Thursday to take these recommendations seriously, “because we know that the vaccination protection wears off after a certain time”. Therefore, she said, “it is important that we start now with the third prick.”
Third prick available at more than 400 primary care physicians
Currently, appointments for the booster can be booked through the end of December. Vaccinations will be given at more than 400 primary care physicians – exclusively with vaccines from Biontech-Pfizer and Moderna, regardless of the first vaccinations. “Only vaccination protects against serious illness,” added Deputy Governor Stephan Pernkopf (ÖVP), pointing out that almost all CoV patients in provincial hospitals are unvaccinated.
Vaccination helps “to ensure that intensive care units are not overburdened,” Königsberger-Ludwig said. This is because a look at hospital stays “clearly shows that the vaccination works.” In addition, the provincial councilor noted that the seven-day incidence among non-vaccinated people was 82, while among fully vaccinated people it was 36.
