The tightened CoV measures are based on the utilization of intensive care beds. Experts emphasize that vaccination can prevent serious illness. In intensive care units in Vienna, 95.3 percent are currently unvaccinated.

Age of patients in intensive care units decreases
Not only in Vienna, where almost two thirds of the Covid 19 patients requiring intensive care are under 60 years of age and four are even younger than 30 (cut-off date: September 7), the average age of coronavirus patients requiring an intensive care bed is falling. This is shown by a look at data in five other states.

Of the four patients – three men and one woman – who required intensive care in Tyrol during the first week of September, two were between 30 and 44 years old, according to the Health Ministry. Another was older than 45 but under 60, and one was between 65 and 69 years old.

In Salzburg, where 10 patients were receiving care in Covid-19 intensive care units on Sept. 7, half were between 45 and 59 years old. Three were in their sixties, and two were between 70 and 79 years old. Seven affected were men, three women.

Upper Austria: proportion of men at two thirds
Styrian hospitals provided intensive care for 16 severe Covid 19 cases on September 7, and 63 percent of those affected were men. Three were between 30 and 44 years old, four over 45 but younger than 54. Five were in their sixties, one in his early seventies. Three were older than 80.

In Upper Austria, where 30 ICU (intensive care unit) patients were recorded in CoV wards on Tuesday (Sept. 7) – two-thirds of them male – according to the Ministry of Health, two were younger than 30, between 15 and 29 years old. Two were between 30 and 44, and 12 were 45 to 59 years old. Seven patients had ages between 60 and 64, and two between 65 and 69. Five were between 70 and 74 years old.

Different age groups in federal states
In Covid 19 wards in Lower Austria, one of a total of 26 ICU patients was in his thirties two days ago. Five were over 40 but not yet 50, and ten were between 50 and 59 years old. Four critically ill Covid 19 patients in Lower Austrian hospitals were in their sixties, five in their seventies. One was over 80 years old.

The exact age of the patients was not made public; moreover, the individual provinces use different age groups. For Vorarlberg, Carinthia, and Burgenland, the Ministry of Health did not have current data regarding the age structure of Covid 19 patients requiring intensive care.
