Corona numbers have been rising for weeks. In mid-August, over 1,000 cases were reported for the first time. Currently, the 7-day average is just over 2,000 cases. And with the start of school in all of Austria this week, the numbers are likely to increase even more soon. Therefore, stricter Corona rules have been in effect since Wednesday.

From Tuesday to Wednesday, 2,624 new cases were now registered. This is by far the highest value in the fourth wave so far. The last time a similarly high value was registered was on April 15.

This brings the 7-day incidence to 164.89. In addition, seven new Covid-related deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours.

However, as of today, it is no longer the current number of cases that will be used as the most important indicator for measures to combat the pandemic. What counts from now on is rather the occupancy rate in the intensive care units. Currently, about nine percent of intensive care beds are occupied by Covid 19 patients.

In absolute numbers: There are currently 825 people in hospital care due to the Corona virus – up 20 patients from Monday morning. Of these, 198 are being cared for in intensive care units, two fewer than on Tuesday.

To date, there have been 715,893 positive test results in Austria. As of today (September 15, 2021, 9:30 a.m.), 10,856 people across Austria have died as a result of the Corona virus.

Currently, Vienna is by far the most affected, with a 7-day incidence now at 231.58, followed by Upper Austria, Salzburg, and Lower Austria by a wide margin. Burgenland and Carinthia currently have the fewest cases.

Almost 60 percent fully immunized
In terms of vaccination progress, Austria is now lagging behind the rest of the EU. Just under 62.8 percent of the total population have received at least one vaccination in this country. This is well below the EU average of 65.9 percent and puts Austria at the back of the pack among Western European countries.
