The eco-social tax reform is in place. For motorists, it will now be massively more expensive.

On Sunday, the government fixed the eco-social tax reform. All the key points can be read here! With the reform, CO2 will be priced higher in the future. Furthermore, the middle income brackets will be relieved. Driving a car will become massively more expensive.

A ton of CO2 will be given a specific price; according to the reform, Austria will pay 30 euros for it. This price will rise each year to 55 euros. Accordingly, the price of gasoline will increase by 8.28 cents per liter.

The Greens demanded even more, but the ÖVP put on the brakes. The diesel privilege will remain. At 50 euros, the price of gasoline will be 13 cents more expensive, at 55 euros it will be 15.18 cents.

As economist Joel Tölgyes explained in the “Kleine Zeitung”, CO2 prices would have to be at an appropriate level to be effective. According to him, the ideal would be to start with a price between 50 and 60 euros per ton of CO2.

Furthermore, the eco-social tax reform stipulated that the entry tax rate on the second tax bracket (income 18,000 to 31,000 euros) will drop from 35 to 30 percent and on the third bracket (31,000 to 60,000 euros) from 42 to 40 percent. The family bonus will be increased from 1,500 euros per child to 2,000 euros.

The regional bonus also provides 100 euros for every Austrian who lives in the city. 200 euros for those living in the countryside, and half that for children.
