AstraZeneca has applied to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for emergency approval of a Covid 19 drug.

International pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca plans to launch a new drug to prevent Covid-19. The company has now applied to the U.S. authorities for emergency approval.

The drug is intended in particular for people who respond poorly to vaccines due to a weakened immune system.

In August, the company announced the results of its Phase III trials, which it said showed the drug was highly effective in reducing risk of COVID infection. More than 75% of people in the test group had complicating factors that could heighten the dangerousness of the virus.

“With this first global regulatory filing, we are one step closer to providing an additional option to protect against covid-19 besides vaccines,” said Mene Pangalos, head of research.
