Every year, the police are looking for around 600 new recruits in Vienna alone. Since 2007, the Vienna Police have been making a targeted effort to recruit Viennese with a migration background for police work.
Yesterday, Deputy Mayor and City Councillor for Integration Christoph Wiederkehr attended the “Vienna needs you!” event at the Amtshaus Floridsdorf. “Vienna is a city of diversity and we want to reflect this diversity in all areas of life. The long-standing and successful cooperation between the city and the Vienna Police is a showcase project for this. People with a migration background bring with them not only different experiences, but above all language skills that are an advantage in police and educational work,” said Wiederkehr.
Next information event in Brigittenau
Viennese people with a migration background are specifically invited by the Integration and Diversity Department of the City of Vienna to the “Vienna needs you!” events, which take place around 4 times a year. “We want to motivate people with a migration background to take on new professional challenges and at the same time clear up misunderstandings,” explains Stefan Almer from the Integration and Diversity Department, who launched the series of events “Wien braucht dich!” was launched in 2007.
Austrian citizenship required
Austrian citizenship is a prerequisite for participation in the training program; the applicant’s country of birth is not decisive. In the admission procedure, athletic aptitude is tested, but German and math skills are also checked. Those who pass the admission procedure can start the 2-year police training.
