Authorities in Australia’s New South Wales and Victoria states are preparing to ease restrictions. The two most populous constituent states reported a total of more than 2,300 cases on Sunday. Victoria announced that crowds will soon be allowed back at sporting and cultural events, but only fully vaccinated ones, while Sydney will see restrictions eased from Monday (Oct. 11) after more than 100 days of lockdown. In NSW, 90.1% of those over 16 have received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 72.8% are fully vaccinated; in Victoria, 85.2% are vaccinated once and 57.7% are vaccinated twice.
Protests against the Italian government’s Corona policy have seen heavy rioting in Rome. Several thousand demonstrators marched through the streets of the Italian capital on Saturday (Oct. 9) and repeatedly clashed with the police. There were violent clashes, the forces of order used batons, pepper spray and water cannons. The demonstrators tried to break through barriers and in turn threw chairs and firecrackers, as can be seen on videos. Earlier in the evening, protesters stormed the headquarters of Italy’s largest union, CGIL. Amateur footage showed them attacking guards and police with sticks and flagpoles, then forcing their way into the building through the door. Prime Minister Mario Draghi condemned the violence in the streets, stressing that unions are guarantors of democracy and workers’ rights, and that any attempt at intimidation should be dealt with harshly.
Corona lockdowns have led to significantly more mental illness among children worldwide. This was reported Friday (Oct. 8) by the charity Save the Children, citing data from the Oxford Covid-19 Government Response Tracker. It surveyed 13,000 children in 46 countries. According to the report, cases of depression, anxiety, loneliness and even self-harm among children increased during the pandemic, with 83 percent of children reporting an increase in negative feelings. For 96 percent of children, these feelings were far more apparent after schools had already been closed for more than 17 weeks. The irregularity of online classes also had an impact on children’s social interactions, sleep, and well-being, she said. Maria Dahl of Save the Children warned of long-term consequences without addressing the problems.
Biontech/Pfizer have filed for emergency approval of their vaccine in the U.S. for children between the ages of five and 11. The vaccine manufacturers justify their application with the increasing number of illnesses in children. The vaccine could be used for 5-11 year olds as early as November if approved. Children currently account for 27 percent of those newly infected in the United States. Pediatricians are also reporting increasing hospitalizations for children.
Data from Israel show that a third dose of vaccine better protects against a severe course of covid. Among those over 60 years of age who are triple vaccinated, only 2 in 100,000 currently develop severe covid. Peers who have been double-vaccinated suffer a critical course and require hospitalization in 21 of every 100,000 cases. Among the unvaccinated, the figure is as high as 132, Tamedia newspapers reported Thursday (Oct. 7). Israel was the first country in the world to start third party vaccinations at the end of July.
