On Wednesday, former US President Donald Trump announced the launch of his own social network “Truth Social,” and a few hours later the platform was already the target of an attack by the Anonymous collective.
The attackers succeeded in gaining access to a private version of the network, reports the New York Times. There, they allegedly created fake accounts for Trump and his confidants and published, among other things, pictures of pigs defecating.
Trump had presented “Truth Social” shortly before. The ex-US president, who was blocked by Twitter and Facebook after his supporters stormed the US Capitol shortly before the end of his term in office, said he wanted to use the network to stand up to the “tyranny” of the big tech companies.
Stolen code
The network, which is modeled on Twitter and in which postings are referred to as “truths,” is also threatened with further trouble. Much of the underlying code is believed to have come from Mastodon, an online network focused on protecting the privacy of its users.
As vice.com reports, the code was published under an open source license. However, the license also stipulates that modified versions must be made available for public review. That is not happening with Trump’s network. It is even claimed that the entire source code of his software is “proprietary.” That it was taken from elsewhere is not mentioned.
Mastodon founder Eugen Rochko already announced to TPM that he wants to take legal action against the license violation.
