Authorities in China have registered more new cases of infection in one day than at any time in more than six weeks. Fifty-nine new locally transmitted infections were reported, up from 48 the previous day. Including cases brought in from abroad, the total is 78 new infections within 24 hours. Most cases occurred in the north, including Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia and Beijing.
Compared to other countries, the numbers in China are low, but the government usually quickly resorts to drastic measures, as it has already done in the capital and some areas in the northwest. In some cases, people have been forbidden to leave their housing complexes, attendance classes in schools have been suspended, and businesses have been forced to close.
