As of Monday, the “situational winter equipment requirement” for cars and trucks up to 3.5 tons will once again come into effect. Drivers in Austria must be on the road with winter tires or have snow chains mounted on at least two drive wheels in snow, slush or ice from Nov. 1. However, chains are only permitted if the road is continuously covered with snow or ice. The police can impose fines of up to 5,000 euros for violations of the equipment requirement.

Trucks and buses weighing more than 3.5 tons must be equipped with winter tires from November 1, at least on the drive wheels. For these vehicles, the winter tire requirement applies regardless of whether there is snow on the road or not. The law recognizes as winter tires models that are marked with the designations “mud and snow” (M+S, M.S. or M&S) and have a tread depth of at least four millimeters, or five millimeters in the case of cross-ply tires. The winter tire requirement applies until April 15 of the following year, for buses until March 15.
