Today’s Sunday is deceptive: thanks to the Föhn, it is mild, if not very mild for the last day in October. In regions where the fog breaks, sunshine and 20 to 21 degrees daytime highs are possible.
Forecast for the next few days: A cold front spreads from the west starting Monday over all of Austria, the daily highs will then only reach around ten degrees. In Vorarlberg, All Saints’ Day will start cool and with increasing rain, forecasts Manfred Spatzierer from the weather service Ubimet. The precipitation will reach Tyrol by noon at the latest, and then by the evening also the eastern half of Austria, which until then had favorable weather conditions. “In the night to Tuesday, it will rain persistently and heavily almost throughout the country,” emphasizes Spatzierer – news that should, however, be heard rather with joy in the forest fire area on the Rax.
Snow down to the valleys
In general, large amounts of precipitation can accumulate in certain regions, for example 50 to 70 liters per square meter from the Brenner Pass to the Niedere Tauern and Upper Carinthia. In addition, the snow line will drop from an initial 2,000 meters to 1,000 meters by Tuesday morning, in some regions even to 700 meters, for example in Salzburg’s Pinzgau region or in Mariazellerland. “This means that there may be very wet snowfall down to many valley locations,” explained Spatzierer. In the mountains, fresh snow is falling: from the Ötztal Alps to Upper Styria, 30 to 50 centimeters of fresh snow are expected.
Starting Novemeber 1, 2021, the situational winter tire obligation applies. From November 1 to April 15, 2022, a vehicle may only be driven on snowy roads, slush or icy roads if the appropriate tires have been fitted. Legally, summer tires with snow chains on at least two drive wheels may also be used on roadways that are continuously covered with snow or ice. However, this is not recommended, it said on the part of the motorist club ARBÖ.
With a traffic control the executive can impose in the extreme case – with endangerment – such up to 5,000 euro, warned the ARBÖ. If it comes to a traffic accident, also problems with the insurance are to be expected.
