Beware: users* are currently being lured into a trap with a blue WhatsApp version on the messenger.
A scam is doing the rounds on WhatsApp that promises gullible users a version of the messenger that is blue in color. Beware: this is dangerous malware.
In this scam, WhatsApp users are contacted directly via Messenger. They receive a message saying that they can get a blue version of the app through an update. All you have to do is click on the link provided.
Typo in the link
At this point, all alarm bells should ring: The link is “blue.whatsap.top”. The missing second P would already be a good indication that this cannot be a serious offer.
If you follow the link anyway, you will get to a selection page, which also screams of fraud. Note the inferior quality of the WhatsApp logo.
If you are still not deterred by this, or if you have done a quick Google search on “Blue WhatsApp” in the meantime and click on the specified control panels, you will install an APK file on your smartphone.
Ransom for unlocking
As a result, smartphone contents, such as photos and videos, are encrypted. As usual in a classic ransomware attack, the scammers then demand a ransom to make the files accessible again.
In addition to encrypting the files, the malware also uses the WhatsApp account of the victims. This is used to send messages to contacts inviting them to download the blue WhatsApp version.
Stay away from such offers
So: stay away from such offers. If you still find it difficult to resist, you should check the links several times before clicking on them. If there is a typing error in the link, you should back out. In addition, a short Google search query on such offers can save a lot of trouble.
