Since Monday, 2G has been in effect throughout Austria. This means that anyone who is neither vaccinated nor recovered is excluded from practically all public entertainment, such as visits to restaurants or hairdressers. In Vienna, almost 700 businesses and 5,000 people have since been checked for compliance with this requirement. There were almost 100 violations, which were punished by means of charges or organ mandate.
Walter Hillerer, head of the Emergency Measures Group of the Vienna City Administration, emphasized to APA the good cooperation between the municipal authorities and the police. From his experience, he reported, “The inspections are predominantly positively received. We don’t want to disturb anyone celebrating, eating or getting their hair done, but our controls are directed against those who don’t comply and want to gain an advantage by doing so.”
Hillerer’s assessment after the first few days of 2G checks: “Compliance is working very well across the board. The Vienna Chamber of Commerce is also at work here to educate. Violations occur in all industries.” For the most part, he said, people are responding very positively to the checks – but, “The later the hour and the more alcohol consumed, there are occasionally situations where our control teams are not received very kindly.”
In the coming days and weeks, the controls on compliance with the 2G rules in Vienna will continue, Hillerer announced. The team on the road tonight in the 20th district also has a long night ahead of it. It will be out until the wee hours of the morning, possibly paying visits to gyms, body-related service providers, events, betting shops and nightspots.
In the federal capital Vienna, more than 10,000 businesses and over 50,000 people have been checked by the police and the magistrate since May 19 – the day on which tourism, gastronomy, sports and leisure businesses were able to reopen with restrictions after the last lockdown. Around 1,500 violations were documented. The focus is on the weekends, but there are also checks during the week – at different times.
