Around 257.57 million people worldwide have been confirmed to have contracted the coronavirus so far. This is according to a Reuters survey based on official data. More than 5.41 million people died with or from the virus, which was first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan, China.
The United States has the highest number of infections and deaths. India and Brazil follow in terms of infections. Globally, the average daily number of new cases has fallen 36 percent in the past three months, the Reuters analysis said. According to the data, more than half of all new infections worldwide currently occur in Europe.
Experts are confident that many countries now have the worst behind them: “We assume that between now and the end of 2022 the point will come where we gain control of the virus,” said WHO expert Maria Van Kerkhove.
