On Friday, 12,245 new infections were reported in Austria. This is the second day in a row that the 7-day incidence has decreased to a current level of 1,054, compared with the previous Friday’s record of 15,809 new Corona cases.
Today’s new infections are also below the previous seven-day average of 13,918. The number of active cases also decreased slightly, to a current 152,362.
New test record
There are also 51 new deaths related to Covid 19 infection to report, bringing the pandemic death toll in Austria to 12,284 so far. In the past 24 hours, more than half a million new PCR tests have been performed – 542,234 to be specific, which is a new record and results in a positive rate of 2.26 percent.
So, with the slight turnaround, is the lockdown that Austria has been in since Monday already making itself felt? Federal rescue commander Gerry Foitik said on Friday in the Ö1 morning journal that in any case the reproduction factor R is also falling.
Over 600 intensive care patients
However, the situation in the intensive care units remains tense. Currently, 608 patients are being treated there – eleven fewer than the previous day. The highest value of Covid intensive care patients ever was exactly one year ago, on November 25, 2020, when 709 Covid patients were treated in an intensive care unit.
In normal wards, there are 3,249 patients, with an increase of three patients.
Austria vaccination world champion – at least currently
In the last seven days, 727,665 vaccine doses were also administered, which is 17.70 percent more than in the previous week. On Friday, 115,702 vaccine doses were administered, which break down as follows: First-sight: 11,098; Second-sight: 14,279; Third-sight 90,325.
Converted to the number of inhabitants, no country is currently vaccinating as fast as Austria – in absolute terms, Austria is still lagging behind in an EU comparison, for example. 66.34 percent of the total population is now vaccinated.
And Austria is also the “world champion” when it comes to testing. In an international comparison, only Cyprus currently tests more.
