Scientific studies have long proven the high protection rates of the Covid-19 vaccine.
But for the first time in Austria, AGES epidemiologists have now succeeded in proving the vaccine’s effectiveness in preventing severe disease in daily practice. The Covid-19 vaccine provides about 95 percent protection against hospital admission after SARS-CoV-2 infection, AGES expert Daniela Schmid said Monday night at an online physician education session.
According to the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) infectious disease epidemiologist, it was possible for the first time to link disease, vaccination and hospital data around Covid-19 for the two provinces of Vienna and Vorarlberg. This was done for the period of calendar weeks 27 to 35 (July 5 to September 5) 2021.
The evaluation by hospitalized patients because of Covid-19, by their vaccination status, by age groups, and even by the vaccines used was not put on paper until later Monday. During the period observed and evaluated, the delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 was responsible for de facto all infections with the Covid-19 pathogens.
The results – outside of scientific studies and thus as so-called real-world data – speak vehemently in favor of vaccination across all age groups: overall, in the 18- to 59-year-old age group, the vaccines protected fully immunized compared to unvaccinated individuals at 95.53 percent from such a severe course of infection that hospital admission was required.
Protection rates were extremely high for AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, ranging from more than 94 percent to nearly 99 percent. The Janssen-Cilag vaccine (Johnson & Johnson; single vaccination) was slightly lower in this age group at around 84 percent.
