News on the WHO response to Omicron: Its chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has underlined that WHO is taking the new variant of the coronavirus “extremely serious.”

He was addressing ministers and diplomats from the 194 member countries attending a special WHO meeting on a possible global pandemic treaty. WHO subsequently shared its findings on Omicron to date in camera.

Reason for lack of end to Corona pandemic
As long as the world allows the pandemic to drag on, developments such as the emergence of a new viral variant are not surprising, Tedros said. Part of the reason the pandemic has not ended so far is that vaccines have been unfairly distributed and protective measures have not been consistently implemented everywhere, he said.

The bulk of the vaccines have so far been administered in rich countries, while several dozen poorer countries have still only been able to vaccinate a fraction of their populations for lack of vaccine.

South Africa and Botswana had encountered Omicron variant
Tedros praised South Africa and Botswana, which had discovered and sequenced the new variant and quickly shared information about it. He criticized travel restrictions against the southern African countries. “I find it very concerning that these countries are now being punished by others for doing the right thing,” he said. There is no basis for such blanket measures, he said. “The global response needs to be calm, coordinated and coherent,” Tedros said.
