The social partners have agreed to open on Sunday on December 19. Due to the lockdown, stationary trade this year falls by three shopping Saturdays in Advent and the traditionally strong Immaculate Conception holiday. The open Sunday before Christmas is intended to make up for at least some of the sales. Employees who volunteer for this day earn double and get an extra day off.

The condition is that the pandemic situation permits opening. The regulation also does not apply to supermarkets and drugstores, which are also currently allowed to be open during the lockdown. Fashion retailers, electronics stores, toy stores and furniture or book stores, for example, will open up. “The possibility of one-time opening applies exclusively to those outlets that are closed during the lockdown,” the union clarified. “With this special solution, it could be possible to limit the economic damage to Austrian retailers,” hopes Handelsobmann Rainer Trefelik.

A door opener for the general liberalization of the store opening times is not to become the exception Sunday. “It is clear to us that we continue to strictly reject any opening of trade on Sunday apart from a possible exemption for 19.12.”, says Martin Müllauer, chairman of the trade sector in the trade union GPA.
