On Thursday, the first Corona vaccinations started at four pilot elementary schools in Vienna.
Schoolchildren in Vienna received Corona vaccinations at pilot elementary schools on Thursday, a week after Biontech/Pfizer’s vaccine was approved for children five years and older.
At the Ganztagsvolksschule (GTVS) Steinlechnergasse in Vienna’s Hietzing district, 125 students received their first Corona vaccination on Thursday. They will receive the second sting on December 23, 2021.
The school is one of eight other Viennese schools where the pilot project of the voluntary vaccination campaign, which is implemented by the Municipal Department 15 – School Medical Service.
A prerequisite for participation in the vaccination campaign is a declaration of consent by the parent or guardian – parents were informed in advance about the offer and the dates of the vaccination and can also be present at the sting if they wish. As with the regular school vaccination program of the city, the respective school physicians vaccinate, the respective infrastructure available at the location is used – today, for example, the gymnasium.
Second vaccination appointment at the school shortly after the Christmas vacations
The vaccine is delivered by the Red Cross. The second appointment will take place shortly after the Christmas vacations, also at the school. It is carried out by the same team as for the first vaccination. In a first step, the vaccinations will initially take place at eight school sites in four districts. After an evaluation, the campaign will be rolled out to all public elementary schools.

“Vaccination is the way out of the pandemic. In order to be able to offer it in the most uncomplicated way possible, we are happy to provide the infrastructure at the schools as well as the school doctors,” said Education Minister Heinz Faßmann in a statement. “By protecting the vaccination, we are bringing back school normality, without constant mask-wearing and testing at high frequency.”
In Vienna, 17,800 children already have first vaccination
Vienna Deputy Mayor and City Councillor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) referred to the good experience already made with school vaccinations at secondary schools at the beginning of the school year. According to Health Councillor Peter Hacker, 17,800 children in the age group of five to eleven years have already received a vaccination in Vienna.
