According to the Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik — (ZAMG – Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics) forecast, the days before Christmas will be relatively cold before a warm front reaches Austria in the night of December 24. On Christmas Eve, there is a risk of freezing rain.

The closer Christmas gets, the colder it should get next week, the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics forecast on Sunday. But in the night to December 24, a warm front with rain down to 1,500 meters should reach the west and north of Austria.
Snow showers possible in some areas on Monday
In the northeast, the clouds will clear quickly on Monday after the overnight passage of the cold front, especially over the lowlands, and the sun will shine more often under variable cloud cover. On the other hand, foothills of the cold front will move westward along the northern side of the Alps to the Kitzbühel Alps. There, some snow showers will still occur during the day, mostly down to low altitudes, before the clouds will clear up again. The daily highs will reach zero to six degrees.
Tuesday will be mostly sunny with fresh temperatures
With high pressure influence on the ground and a cold northwesterly current, very sunny weather will set in on Tuesday in most regions. At Lake Constance, in the southern basins and in the northern foothills of the Alps and along the Danube, there will initially be some fog, but this will clear in the morning. Later, only high veil clouds will appear in the sky, in the east, spring clouds may also spread. Daytime highs from minus one to plus three degrees.
Morning frost possible on Wednesday
With calm, wintry high-pressure weather, morning fog and high fog patches are to be expected in the typical basin and valley locations on Wednesday. During the day, there are widespread sunny skies. Towards evening, the fog tendency will increase again over basins and valleys.
Winds will be light. Severe morning frost with early temperatures of minus twelve to minus five degrees, in the inner Alps also below. During the day, minus two to plus three degrees.
Thursday starts with tenacious high fog and remains cloudy
On Thursday, over the lowlands and in basins, the high fog will remain mostly tenacious. During the day, clouds will thicken from the west, even in the middle layers, and replace the high fog patches with a constant gloomy weather character. The sun will only show a little in between. However, there will be no precipitation all day. Early temperatures minus ten to minus two degrees, daily highs minus two to plus five degrees.
Risk of freezing rain on 24 December
Already in the night of Christmas Eve, a warm front with rain down to 1,500 meters will reach the west and north of Austria. The cold air lakes in basin and valley locations will also be cleared only slowly, despite the reviving westerly wind. Thus, especially during the first half of the day, there is a risk of freezing rain in the west, north and northeast of Austria. South of the main ridge of the Alps, it will remain precipitation-free for the time being, here the sun will come through in phases outside the fog zones. Early temperatures minus ten to plus four degrees, daily highs two to nine degrees.
