According to one report, Apple will do away with a SIM card slot in the iPhone 15. Accordingly, if the current product cycle is maintained, there would no longer be a current iPhone with a regular SIM card from 2023.

Instead, the eSIM will be used to register with the mobile carrier. The eSIM is a virtual SIM card and a fixed component of the chip. Starting with the iPhone XS series, eSIM has been on board iPhones since 2018.

Doing away with SIM card brings advantages for Apple
For Apple, doing away with the SIM card slot has 2 advantages at once. First, the iPhone can be built more cheaply because one component is omitted. Secondly, the slot eliminates a point where dust or water could penetrate the device, making the iPhone less sensitive to external influences.

The next logical step would be for Apple to do away with the Lightning connector. Charging would then be done exclusively with wireless or Magsafe chargers. A positive side effect for Apple would be that it would not have to install a USB-C port in iPhones, as the EU has proposed in a draft law. Thus, customers can continue to be charged with expensive accessories in the form of Magsafe chargers or chargers from third-party manufacturers licensed by Apple.
