The weather presents itself on the last day of the year from its mild side. According to the experts of the Austrian Severe Weather Center, Vienna will even experience the mildest turn of the year since 1941.

The slide into the new year 2022 will be a much too mild one. And the first days of the coming year will remain so, according to the forecast of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG). Temperatures will reach up to 17 degrees on New Year’s Eve and remain in the double-digit range thereafter. In addition, lively or even strong winds will blow in some parts of the country.

Weather on New Year’s Eve extremely sunny
The forecast in detail: Today, Friday, the old year will end extremely sunny and also very mild in most of the country. In the inner Alps, shallow fog patches will make themselves felt, at Lake Constance also denser fog patches, most of them will dissipate after a few hours. A few loose cloud fields in the north and northeast should also hardly matter. The wind will be light to moderate, on the mountains as well as on the eastern edge of the Alps and partly also in the foothills of the Alps sometimes brisk from westerly directions. Depending on the wind, early temperatures will be around minus three to plus twelve degrees, daytime highs seven to 17 degrees, only occasionally below five degrees in tenacious fog.

Extremely mild turn of the year in Vienna
The increasing wind drives the temperatures up on New Year’s Eve: “At midnight, the temperatures in the Vienna basin are often between 10 and 13 degrees,” says Manfred Spatzierer, chief meteorologist of the Storm Center . This heralds the mildest turn of the year in the provincial capital since at least the year 1941: “If you look at the temperatures at exactly 0 o’clock, the Viennese experienced the mildest turn of the year so far with about 9 degrees at 0 o’clock on 1.1.1987”, analyzes the expert. “This value is likely to be surpassed this year.” In contrast, the coldest turn of the year in Vienna was on Jan. 1, 1997, with -9.4 degrees.

Up to 16 degrees at New Year
On Saturday, the New Year will begin very sunny, especially in the western and southern provinces, with only sporadic patches of tenacious fog. Over the north and east, on the other hand, partly extensive cloud fields will move, in addition also lively, in places strong west-northwest wind will blow. Early temperatures in the inner Alps and in the very south will often be around or just below zero degrees, otherwise between three and twelve degrees. Daytime highs will mostly reach seven to 16 degrees.

On Sunday, there will still be some fog or high fog in the morning, especially in the Danube region and in the valleys and basins in the south. During the day, generally quite friendly and often sunny weather will prevail. In the afternoon, however, more clouds will move in from the northwest. The wind will be light to moderate, in the afternoon at higher altitudes partly brisk from westerly directions. From zero to four degrees in the morning – possibly light frost in the valleys of the south – temperatures will rise to five to 14 degrees.

Monday will be rainy
On Monday, some widespread, often dense clouds will move in from the west and rain must be expected, especially on the northern side of the Alps from Vorarlberg to western Lower Austria. However, it will remain quite mild and the snow line will range between about 1,300 and 1,800 meters above sea level. In the east and south it will remain generally dry and especially in the south also sunny for longer. The wind will often be brisk to strong, at higher altitudes occasionally stormy from westerly directions, only in the south it will remain partly light windy. Early temperatures will range from minus three to plus ten degrees, daytime highs from seven to 13 degrees.

Rain continues on Tuesday
On Tuesday, clouds will accumulate on the northern side of the Alps and it will often rain continuously. Further north, it will rain much less. The snow line drops to 900 to 1,400 meters. The south remains generally favorable weather, it remains dry and the sun also comes out again and again. The wind will blow weakly to moderately, at higher altitudes partly briskly from westerly directions, in the south a weak easterly wind will blow. From minus two to plus six degrees in the morning, the values will rise to four to eleven degrees.
