The Omicron variant of coronavirus has replaced Delta as the predominant mutation in Austria by the end of 2021. In calendar week 52, 2,915 Delta and 4,360 Omicron cases were detected, an update from the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) showed today.
In the previous week, Delta had been significantly more dominant with 5,953 to 1,905 detections. In total, there have been 6,768 confirmed Omicron cases so far. According to AGES, additional reports are expected for week 52. In addition, the sequencing is only a random sampling, especially outside of Vienna.
In the federal capital, the test evaluation of “Alles gurgelt” is pre-sequenced to the variants, with 3,766 Omicron cases detected so far. There were 801 detections in Salzburg, 667 in Lower Austria and 618 in Upper Austria. Tyrol and Vorarlberg follow with 234 and 216 cases respectively, 161 are in Burgenland, 160 in Carinthia and 145 in Styria.
