The number of deaths following PCR-confirmed coronavirus infection in the UK has exceeded 150,000. As the Ministry of Health announced yesterday, 150,057 deaths have now been recorded in the country within 28 days of a positive test result. However, the actual number is likely to be even higher. Covid-19 has already been recorded on the death certificate of more than 173,000 people in the United Kingdom.
The country, with a population of about 67 million, remains firmly in the grip of the Omicron epidemic. About 146,000 new infections were recorded today alone. The latest 7-day incidence was 1,900 (as of January 3). However, while the curve in London now appears to be leveling off, the numbers in the north of England continue to rise sharply.
The government in London has so far rejected tougher measures to contain the pandemic in the largest part of the country, England, citing the fact that hospital admissions and deaths have not risen to the same extent. However, more and more hospital operators are sounding the alarm because they are increasingly short of staff due to the many cases of infection.
