The new protein vaccine preparation from U.S. manufacturer Novavax (Nuvaxovid) will be delivered to Austria today, Thursday.
“The Ministry of Health can confirm that the first shipment of Novavax vaccine is scheduled to arrive in Austria on Thursday. Delivery to the provinces will then take place next week,” it said, according to an APA inquiry. Austria has ordered 750,000 doses of Novavax for the first quarter of 2022.
The aim is to target, in particular, those people who have so far refused vaccination. The drug from Novavax is the fifth Corona vaccine that has been approved in the EU. Two doses are injected about three weeks apart. It is a protein vaccine – so it is based on a different technology than previously available Corona preparations. Its effectiveness in protecting against symptomatic infections has been reported by the EU’s Medicines Agency (EMA) to be around 90 percent.
First, a fixed delivery commitment arrived in Lower Austria on Wednesday, LHStv. Stephan Pernkopf (ÖVP) and Gesundheitslandesrätin Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig (SPÖ) announced. Nuvaxovid could “contribute to the fact that the vaccination rate in our province, which is high in comparison to the rest of the country, continues to rise, as many people have been waiting for this special vaccine.”
For the currently 10,082 pre-registered Lower Austrians and all other interested persons over 18 years of age, Nuvaxovid will be available from Wednesday next week in all Lower Austrian provincial vaccination centers without an appointment. Likewise, ordinations can order the vaccine. “There are sufficient doses available,” informed the local politicians. Two vaccinations at intervals of two weeks are recommended for primary immunization.
