War in Ukraine: “The pain is huge.“

“Families are being torn apart by the war; the pain is huge,” reported Klaus Schwertner, executive director of Caritas in the Archdiocese of Vienna, in a telephone interview with the Kathpress news agency on Wednesday. Schwertner had left on Tuesday with a team from Caritas Austria and Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna and is currently in the town of Bala in eastern Slovakia.

Situation dramatic: “Need for help is increasing.“

Caritas is first and foremost helping on the ground, providing people with emergency aid packages, handing out hot meals and drinks via field kitchens, and distributing blankets and clothing. “The situation is becoming more and more dramatic. Due to the war, the initial situation is extremely critical and extremely unclear. Hundreds of thousands of people have already fled. The first people, including children, have lost their lives. The need and the need for help are increasing hour by hour,” said Foreign Aid Secretary-General Andreas Knapp. “In numerous towns and villages in Ukraine, existing services have already been converted so that first and foremost internally displaced persons can be cared for. In addition, Caritas is also helping its partner organizations on the Ukrainian border care for people who have fled. And last but not least, we are dealing with necessary preparations for the care of war refugees arriving in Austria.”

“The Red Cross is active with all its actors in and around Ukraine, providing emergency aid in the conflict areas as a neutral organization, caring for fled people in the countries of arrival and preparing assistance in Austria,” Red Cross Secretary General Michael Opriesnig told us. “Once again, we demand that the attacks on civilian targets must stop.” On Monday, the first part of an aid delivery financed by “Neighbor in Need” with 3,400 blankets had been delivered to Ukraine. The Red Cross will additionally deliver hygiene packages to supply 150,000 people, generators, and other relief supplies for emergency shelters to the crisis area.
