This week, the Corona traffic light shines dark red in nearly all of Austria.
Also, this week the Corona traffic light shows the usual color: dark red. Except for Tyrol, the risk number has increased everywhere.
The orange zone of still high risk seems challenging to reach the moment. This is because cases have gone up in eight provinces in the past two weeks. Vienna has the most substantial Corona increase with 18 percent.
Nevertheless, the risk figure, which includes the age of the affected person and vaccination status in addition to infections, is still the best in the federal capital at 230, even though it is even further away from the 100 for leaving the maximum risk zone than the week before when it was 170. The worst value is now in Burgenland with 514.
Another negative aspect is that infections are higher among people over 65 (21 percent) than among the total population (12 percent). Thus, an increase in the number of cases is expected in both normal and intensive care units – after all, this is only moderate, by a good one percent in each case.
Absolute corona case numbers now challenging to compare
The total case numbers are now challenging to reach because far more tests are carried out in the east than in the rest of the country. In Vienna, for example, there were about 134,500 tests per 100,000 inhabitants, while in the province with the supposedly lowest incidence, Tyrol, there were just under 36,300.
Those countries that test more logically also find more asymptomatic cases. In Vienna, for example, 68 percent of the positive cases were in people who were not currently showing any symptoms. On the other side of the scale is Carinthia, where little testing is done, with six percent. Among all tests in Vienna, 2.4 percent were positive, whereas, in Upper Austria, 9.1 percent were positive.
Corona’s trend seems to be downward in Tyrol
Nevertheless, the trend in Tyrol seems to be down because the fact that little testing is done in the province is not new, and at least in six of the nine districts, the detected infections decreased. However, the district with the lowest incidence is in Salzburg, Tamsweg, a former hotspot. Several Tyrolean districts follow behind, led by Schwaz. Apart from the smaller towns of Rust and Waidhofen/Ybbs, the district of Zwettl has the highest value.
