The Department of Health “post-reported” 3,412 Corona deaths on Tuesday. This represents a 21 percent increase in officially confirmed Covid deaths since the pandemic began. “The apparent increase in Covid 19 deaths comes from a data reconciliation between Statistics Austria’s cause-of-death statistics and the Epidemiological Reporting System (EMS),” a ministry statement said.

The deaths now being subsequently reported cover the period through the end of 2021. As of Tuesday, the number of people who had died from or with Covid-19 had been reported at 16,439. The subsequent reports bring the number of infected people who have been killed since the pandemic began more than two years ago to 19,851 already.

The ministry stressed that the affected cases are already in the EMS. Only the death data not previously recorded in the EMS will be imported into the EMS case report on Wednesday. The statement said this reconciliation is being done to ensure that the data is consistent and of high quality.

The post-reported deaths were already kept in Statistics Austria’s cause-of-death statistics. They include deaths with covid-19 as the underlying condition or as a concomitant disease that had not yet been recorded in the EMS due to a reporting delay. The subsequent reporting process occurs within the framework of an annual data reconciliation, which the Ministry and AGES carry out in cooperation with Statistics Austria for quality assurance. Laboratory-confirmed infected persons for whom the status “recovered/cured” did not exist in the EMS between the level “disease” and the status “death” are considered to be Covid 19 dead.
