A new wave of Corona infection is currently hitting South Africa. “The fifth wave is here. Watch out,” the Center for Innovation and Response to Epidemics (CERI) warned on Twitter Tuesday. CERI is led by virologist Tulio de Oliveira, who became known for detecting the beta and omicron variants.
According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), 5,062 cases, 15 deaths, and 83 hospitalizations within 24 hours at the last count. The numbers recorded in recent days are the highest in nearly three months, with the most significant increase in the past two weeks. Health Minister Joe Phaahla had already expressed his “concern” last week.
The country had only lifted all Corona requirements in early April. According to official figures, South Africa is the country on the African continent most affected by the pandemic. With nearly 60 million, the country recorded more than 3.7 million cases and about 100,350 deaths. Less than 45 percent of adults are fully vaccinated.
