How often you should wash your hair is up to you. Because in this case, it depends primarily on your feelings. However, scientists have now found a very concrete rule that you could follow in your hair washing routine.

It is often said that the less you wash your hair, the better. But is there even such a thing as THE right measure?

It’s a question many of us have dealt with at one time or another: Is it possible to wash your hair too often? Sure, how often we wash hair depends primarily on personal preference. But if you’re still looking for the ultimate hair routine, you can turn to science. According to two studies published in 2021, a particular rule is recommended: 5 to 6 hair washes per week.

It sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? Especially when you consider that celebrities and hairdressers always teach us not to clean our hair too often. So how did the study authors come to this surprising conclusion?

Two Asian participant groups without specific medical conditions had their scalps examined to determine how often to wash their hair. The researchers conducted an epidemiological study to observe the effects of their washing frequencies.

A controlled study of washing frequency accompanied this. For the assessment, the research team used objective hair and scalp condition measures in both cases and the participant‘s self-assessment.

No harmful effects from frequent washing

Participants showed the most satisfaction with their hair and scalp condition during the survey when they washed their hair 5 to 6 times a week.

This subjective assessment could then also be objectively substantiated. The controlled hair washes also showed that an almost daily washing regimen was superior to a weekly routine in all cases. It is also exciting that no harmful effects on the hair were evident at this frequency level.

The study authors concluded that a higher frequency was more beneficial and preferred among Asian participants. According to the results, concerns of “over-purification” were subjectively and objectively unfounded. So now we know that too! So anyone who had a guilty conscience about daily hair washing can now rest comfortably!
