The Covid forecasting consortium predicts that rising Corona infection numbers will soon be felt in hospitals.

According to the report, a threefold increase in Covid 19 patients in standard care settings can be expected in the next two weeks. In intensive care units (ICU), the experts’ current assessment anticipates twice as many Covid inpatients as admitted by early July.

As for the infection numbers, they will continue to skyrocket in the coming days. Due to the increasing dominance of the omicron subvariants BA.4/BA.5, which are more infectious than BA.2, “accelerated dynamics” are to be expected, the consortium states. Specifically, by next Wednesday (June 29), up to 17,000 new daily infections should already be factored in.

The consortium calculated point estimate is 13,170, and the seven-day incidence is expected to rise again to more than 1,000 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The range the experts gives is between 820 and 1,350, with a point estimate of 1,027. The most recent seven-day incidence was 478.1 for 7,281 officially confirmed infections with SARS-CoV-2 (figures from Tuesday, June 21).

According to the forecasting consortium, Vienna and Salzburg sub-variants BA.4/BA.5 were already responsible for more than 70 percent of all infections in the previous week. “It should be noted in this regard that, especially since the dominance of the Omicron variant, there has been an increasing proportion of incidental findings in hospital beds whose primary cause of hospitalization is not Covid-19,” the experts emphasize.
