The World Health Organization (WHO) Europe is recommending a 2nd Corona booster vaccination for immunocompromised and other vulnerable people in at-risk groups.

To deliver additional protection and minimize the risk of severe disease progression, hospitalization, and death, moderately to severely immunocompromised people over five and their contacts should receive a 2nd booster vaccination, WHO Europe recommended Tuesday.

Further corona booster vaccination for at-risk groups
The Copenhagen-based agency said that countries in the Region should also consider offering further vaccination to specific at-risk groups, such as the elderly, health care workers, and pregnant women. This is based on updated recommendations for the autumn season, for which a group of experts looked at the current status of vaccination, the epidemiological situation in Europe, and findings on the effectiveness of vaccines against the Omikron variant of the coronavirus. The experts advised the 53 Member States in the Region to increase their efforts to ensure that all primary and first booster vaccinations are at the most up-to-date level in the country.

WHO recommends corona booster vaccination
According to WHO Regional Director Hans Kluge, these preliminary recommendations come when case numbers are rising in Europe. He noted that vaccinating all eligible people with the recommended number of basic immunizations and the first booster dose must remain a priority. But a second booster vaccination should also be given to immunocompromised people and consideration for others at risk.
